I keep wanting to like Harry's Law- Kathy Bates! Shoes! Hilarious lawyer antics!- and I suppose I do enjoy it, because I really am something of a sucker for hilarious lawyer antics (moreso after having lived through a number of them when I was working for $LAWOFFICE). But. vague, brief spoilers ) So, my feelings are mixed. It's a smart, funny show, and it has its awesome moments, but it leaves a bad taste in the back of my brain sometimes.

The new season of White Collar has been pretty frickin' sweet, though, so at least there's that.

I've started playing FFVIII again! This is because a nice, repetitive, level-grindy old-school-style RPG is about all my brain can handle when I am afflicted with the Dripping Misery and General Malaise. (After a week and a half of mildly flu-like awfulness, I am finally getting better. I haaaaaate being sick.)

Well, that was a fun weekend. Much as I dearly love Easter, I'll be happy to not do that again.

And self, self, oh, self, reading Assassin's Creed fic does not count as studying for your Arab Politics exam. Really. The two don't even focus on the same time period, self. (My sudden renewed interest in AC (or AssCreed, as I find myself more and more inclined to call it) has gotten me actually looking at that community I moderate over on LJ again. Spent the afternoon reorganizing the tags. >.>)

In other news, just when I thought The Middleman couldn't get any more awesome, it does something like The Devil's Dance. ffff, why did it take me this long to watch the rest of this show? Everything about Lacey and Dubdub's relationship makes me so, so happy. Also, Noser. Everything about Noser is good for me. And Ida. And the Middleman himself. <3

Warehouse 13 is a less fantastic show- but it's still a lot of fun. As long as the subtexty tension between Myka and Pete stays subtexty, I will be perfectly happy to keep watching wacky steampunky paranormal shennanigans.

In other news, the season finale of Burn Notice? )

Watching some Chuck right now (maybe if I watched less TV, I'd be more engaged with my homework *sigh*), and the show is still all sorts of problematic with regard to gender and geek stereotypes, and it tends to be unrelentingly depressing despite its incredibly goofy premise- but I do dearly love Casey and all the minor characters at the Buy-More. Also, apparently the show has decided to engage in the occasional random musical interlude- and there is never anything wrong with that. "This is the sound of liberation?"

Because I have work on Wednesday, I cannot go to a taping of the Daily Show. I just feel the need to state this, because a tragedy of this proportion needs to be recorded. *sigh*

You know, I checked the posted academic calendar three times to make sure it actually said the semester started today. Because that just didn't make sense- today is a national holiday. Public libraries are closed, the post office is quiet and dark. And while I am accustomed to school being open on Veteran's Day, MLK Day is usually a day off. But the academic calendar said the semester began today, and I, poor fool, believed it.

Livingston campus is creepy when it's empty, y'all. But the bookstore was open, so I picked up my textbook for Arab Politics in Society. The books for Gender and Sexuality in Islam weren't there, and I apparently don't have any textbooks for Intro to Linguistic Theory, which means this is going to be a blessedly cheap semester.

Leverage and Being Human- not really spoilery, but cut just in case )

Oh, Glee. You hit my embarrassment squick so hard, and I still haven't watched the disability episode because I'm pretty sure it'll make me flail in horror. I can only find "LOL women are crazy!" and "LOL minorities are weird!" funny a limited number of times, and I cannot stand plotlines that revolve around pregnancy. And yet! I'm still watching it, because even though when it fails, it fails hard, it still gets things right in awesome ways.

minor spoilers for the latest episode of Glee )

Still catching up on various shows, but oh, man, I love Castle to pieces, it fills me all full of domestic-bliss squee.

I think I could have done without the deep and profound insight into the hormone-drenched psyche of the teenaged male. Also, yes, show, Morena Baccarin is hot. I'm pretty sure we could have figured that one out ourselves, but I guess you wanted to drive it home just in case we might have thought about being interested in Anna for something other than her hotness- like the fact that she's the sole leader of an incredibly advanced planet, or the terrifyingly effective way she handled the newscaster's half-hearted protests.

Few things irritate or turn me off more than finding fic for a rare pairing that I adore, only to have it be a cookie-cutter characterization-free smut scene written by someone who developed their idea of "sexy" by reading fanfiction.net. (IT'S OKAY TO GET SOME CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT ON YOUR PORN. THE SMUT CAN HANDLE IT, SMUT IS GOOD AT MULTITASKING.)

This is why I don't read fic terribly often anymore (lack of sex drive aside). I've been spoiled by the good stuff, and I'm no longer so rabidly attached to the things I fan that I will slog through mediocre dreck just to get my fix. I don't know if this apathy is a characteristic of my current state of mind- i.e., broken and bleeding out my ears- or a symptom of my general disillusionment with fandom. Have I just gotten too old to maintain the level of intense connection I once had with fandom? Or is it that the shows and stories that I follow now simply lack the quality and pull of my old fandoms? (Given that the one thing I obsessed over more than any other was Naruto, some five years ago, this seems unlikely.)

It probably doesn't help that most of the things I follow have very small fandoms, which makes it easy to quickly exhaust the supply of good shit.

This is all mostly just to say that I dearly wish I didn't have to expend so much effort to find halfway decent Ryan/Esposito fic for Castle, and I dearly hope that the White Collar fandom explodes into a gigantic orgy of polyamorous fluff. (Peter is very growly and competent when he's on his own- put him next to his wife, however, and he gets flustered and useless. He also gets flustered and useless around Neal. <3 I am enjoying this show so much and Natalie Morales just showed up to make things even more awesome and everyone is so pretty and and and hee.)

Oh sweet crispy crackers, my head. *whimper*

I've been keeping up with my TV- Glee continues to grow more and more offensively homophobic, transphobic, and socially clueless by the week, and I really wish it were just 42 minutes of music videos and dance montages. Castle's new season has been delicious and hilarious, and seeing Nathan Fillion reprise his space cowboy days on the Halloween episode put me in a happy place. If Eastwick had more non-white characters, it would be so perfect, but in the meantime, I am enjoying having lots of fully realized female characters (though having at least one of them be unattached would be nice, you know) and Paul Gross's badtouch is so good. I like Flash Forward, even if it's kind of silly and has too many characters. And White Collar pretty much made me jizz in my pants (Matt Bomer is a pretty, pretty man and he wears pretty, pretty clothes, and I am a shallow, shallow girl).

I keep wanting to rant about Glee, but I feel like other people have probably already done so with greater eloquence than I can manage on a good day, nevermind a day where my brain is trying to dig an escape tunnel out of my skull. (And yet, I keep watching it, even though it makes me *anguish hands* all over the place. There may be something wrong with me.)

Oh, Glee. Glee, we need to talk.

Your snappy musical numbers are amazing, Glee. They inject just the right amount of- dare I say it- gleeful absurdity into an already absurd show and make it sparkle. And look at you, with your quota-filling cast of minority characters! Diversity in a show about high school? I'm so proud of you, Glee!

But, seriously. )

I don't understand people who say Sophie-Anne isn't scary enough- I think she's fucking terrifying. Not like Eric with his quiet self assurance and physical presence, no, but with her shifting moods and the way she completely socially dominates everyone- nnggg. Scary. And crazy. And she very clearly unsettles Eric, which I think is fabulous. Eric could use a little more unsettling in his unlife. He's more interesting when he's unsettled.

I'm a little in love with Arlene's kids- I hope they get some screentime next season, because they're charming and hilarious. The matter-of-fact way they turn to each other to talk about Rene- "Yup, I'm pretty sure he's dead." "Yup." Awesome.

I only just noticed Terry's shirt in the scene at Merlotte's- "WARNING I suffer from occasional loss of mental stability and become very violent with only slight provocation. The Veteran's Administration has determined that both mental and physical harassment of my person may be hazardous to your health and well being. So stay the hell out of my face." Best. Shirt. Ever. I will always love Terry.
