Perhaps I will start crossposting my movie and TV reactions from Wordpress to here; perhaps I will make an effort to become actively involved in...things.
Anyway. I find, now that I spend much of my time on Shakesville, Pandagon, and Slacktivist, I've been redefining what I look for in my entertainment. That's right, I've become a Humorless Feminist, one of those people who finds racial and gender stereotypes kind of offputting.
I like to watch TV and read books and play video games that have fully realized female characters. I like my entertainment to avoid making jokes at the expense of someone's weight, race, gender, or sexual orientation. I like to see diversity that doesn't rely on filling stereotypes (the Asian Geek, the Black Combat Dude, the Middle Eastern Zealot, etc.). I'm sick of slut shaming and fat hating and of watching female characters get blamed for the social dysfunctions of the male characters.
I like other stuff, too. (Snatch! is still my favorite movie in the whole world; I'm not even going to try to defend it.) Sometimes I even like the somewhat offensive stuff more, because I like picking apart the bits that bothered me. (I should write about the Star Trek movie. I could go on for pages about that.) I've become less interested in fandom for fic than I am for meta these days. (The fact that I currently have no sex drive is probably related; I won't deny that I mostly read fic for the porn.)
I like Leverage, Burn Notice, Royal Pains, True Blood, and Chuck. I'm burned out on Doctor Who and Torchwood. I like Due South, The Sentinel, and the BBC's Robin Hood. I love One Piece and certain aspects of Bleach; I love the Final Fantasy and Zelda series. I like books, but I don't read enough, or enough "good literature." Right now I'm reading The Fall of Kings by Ellen Kushner and Delia Sherman- I loved Swordspoint and its sequel, though I'm having a harder time getting into Kings.
I like Goblins, Looking for Group, Gunnerkrigg Court, and Girls With Slingshots. (One of these things is not like the others.) I can also quote Achewood with great ease, much to the consternation of the people around me.
I like it when people don't give me blank stares when I talk about male privilege and the patriarchy, but I have to allow for some blank stares being the result of my own flailing inability to construct coherent sentences.
I like being able to trust the media I derive entertainment from and the people I enteract with to not hurt me. Unfortunately, that seems like too much to ask for most of the time.
