I need to collect all of my library books and return them- I was being so good at getting them in on time for a while there. And then Things happened and School happened and now I've got a bunch of books that are four days overdue that I haven't even read yet.
Currently overdue are Virtu by Sarah Monette, Cities of Coin and Spice by Cat Valente, and Bloodhound by Tamora Pierce. The only one I finished was Virtu- I'm about halfway through Bloodhound, but since I picked it up without rereading Terrier, I keep forgetting who the characters are and why I'm supposed to care about them.
Tamora Pierce was one of the biggest literary influences of my childhood; I really want to finish this book, but I'm not feeling it right now. Too scatterbrained at the moment.
Haven't gotten to Cities yet for the same reason; I know Catherynne Valente's books are going to demand a bit more from me than YA fantasy typically does, and I'm exhausted all the time right now.
Other books currently out from the library or in progress: The Fall of Kings by Ellen Kushner and Delia Sherman, Snowcrash by Neal Stephenson, The Book of Amber by Roger Zelazny, and Innocent Mage by Karen Miller. I may have one other book out, but I can't remember it if I do. I've started all of them but The Book of Amber.
I've read Snowcrash before; I only picked it up because I don't actually own a copy, and it's one of my comfort books. I've made the unfortunate discovery that it isn't a comforting book for me anymore, and I may not finish it.
The Fall of Kings isn't as immediately engaging as Swordspoint and The Privilege of the Sword are- much of the plot revolves around academic research, which is honestly not something I find all that exciting. (God, someone remind me why I'm going back to school again?) And I find the principle characters less interesting that Richard, Alex, Katherine, and Artemisia- Theron and Basil are incredibly self absorbed, and that gets on my nerves. I also feel like their romance is shallow and forced, but if that turns into a plot point later on, I'll be delighted.
I've only barely started Innocent Mage; within the first fifty pages, all I can say is that the main character is an arrogant dick with little reason to be arrogant, and oh, look, it's another world with a magical race of tall, mysterious blonds. *yawn* Chuck in one (1) mysterious prophecy, one (1) reluctantly wise prince, and two (2) mysterious keepers of the prophecy, and you've got a recipe for a book that I'm not feeling terribly inclined to finish. Those first fifty pages are crucial, you know. If I don't find something I like, I might put the book down. And once I put a book down, the chances of me picking it back up again are pretty slight. (This is why I will never finish Les Mis, and why I never read all of Kate Elliot's Crown of Stars books. I wanted to read them, but I had to put them down, and then I just never got around to picking them up again.)
When I'm not reading or avoiding homework, I'm replaying FFIV on the DS- I blame the OCRemix album project, which is amazing. I really ought to replay the J2E rom translation or the GBA version instead- I much prefer Kain's characterization in both of those versions to the DS- but I am too enraptured by the pretty graphics and the silly voice acting.
After seventeen years, I can admit that it is no longer the Greatest Game of All Time- but it will always hold a special place in my heart for being the first game I ever fell in love with.
