Apparently the result of excessive compartmentalization is paralysis- and so, on the eighth birthday of my writing blog, I celebrated by taking down all of the content. Which doesn't seem to have helped much with the paralysis, and I'm still not sure it was entirely the right decision (though I also don't feel it was entirely the wrong one).
I am so very tired of the magic vs. technology dichotomy in storytelling. It's not new or interesting to have your magic users blowing up their computers, or your AIs and your werewolves not getting along, or your guns jamming when you bring them into Faery. I'm especially tired of that last, because I can excuse magic and computers not mixing, but there's no reason you can't have magic and guns mixing. Or magic and internal combustion, or magic and steam. Because that's all straight up mechanics, and it makes as much sense for magic to interfere with them as it would for magic to interfere with a windmill. And don't give me any of that cold iron not holding magic crap; while it's true that a lot of guns are made of steel, bronze alloys were and are pretty common, bullets are made of lead, and most casings are brass or plastic.
If your magic acts like some sort of generalized accelerated entropy field on everything, then maybe we can talk.
This probably means that I need to investigate the wonderful world of urban fantasy in greater depth, because I know there are writers who have inverted or ignored this trope. I just need to make more of an effort to find them.
In other news, I am somehow watching the Academy Awards, and even though I know it's quite likely for Avatar and Sandra Bullock to win in the categories they've been nominated, I will still feel that there is no justice (or taste, or cultural awareness) in the world if they do. *siiiigh* (I'm also not sure if I should be delighted or horrified by Ben Stiller's presentation of the Best Makeup award. :| )
